Changing the enemy, visualizing the other. Studies about the otherness in the Early Modern Europe.

Organizers: Borja Franco Llopis (UNED, Spain), Giuseppe Capriotti (Univesità di Macerata)

 In recent years, one of the major interests of the scientific community is to analyze the multicultural European Society. In the Early Modern period, Muslims, Jews, Protestants and Catholics were living together, but their coexistence produced several polemical encounters that were represented in different ways. The aim of this panel is not only to analyze how the “other” was pictured in the artworks but also how its representation mutated depending on the historical background of each area or the cultural or commercial contacts held during these centuries. Christians dressed like Turks, Turks introduced in Biblical themes, Muslim with Hebrew features, etc. will be studied in order to map the mutations of the alterity and their reasons.

Paper topics might include, but are not limited to: 

Hybridization in the representations of the otherness.

Conflicts between the writing sources and the visual culture in the illustration of the alterity.

Continuity and changes in the visual models of the other. 

Please send a two-pages CV and an abstract of no more than 150 words to Borja Franco (bfranco@geo.uned.es) and Giuseppe Capriotti (giuseppe.capriotti@unimc.it) by May 25, 2016.
