This series of panels will examine the role of vision and its instruments, especially as they inform the relationship between literature and other disciplines. How does literature adopt and adapt developments in science or artistic techniques, and what does this mean for vision’s authority or for visual modes of representation? Conversely, what consequences might the integration of ocular and optical motifs in works of literature have on other disciplines? What theoretical considerations might we derive from the different optical instruments and their respective functions? What are the implications of a “specular” or “lenticular” mode of representation?
We welcome works from all linguistic areas and disciplines between 1300-1700, especially as they relate to literature.
