New date and deadline extended; Call for Papers : "Caravaggio’s Gypsy Fortune Teller: Virtues and Vices in Post-Tridentine Italy” We seek papers addressing Caravaggio’s early work, more specifically his genre paintings such as gypsy fortune tellers and cardsharps. Papers may also address the influence of his work on other artists, i.e. the Caravaggisti, and a range of related topics, such as gambling in Post-Tridentine Italy. We welcome a range of methodologies as well as interdisciplinary approaches to the subject. Papers should last 20 minutes long. The conference is being held in honor of the arrival from Rome of Caravaggio’s Gypsy Fortune Teller. The conference is on May 13th and will be followed by an afternoon viewing of the painting at the Italian Cultural Institute on 68th and Park. Please email abstracts to P. Rocco, CUNY Graduate Center, c/o cleopatricia@hotmail.com by April 15th, 2011.
