Renaissance Portraiture at the Met: Fashion Fabrics and Portrait Medals

Thursday, March 27, 11:00 AM-2:00 PM

The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s European Sculpture and Decorative Arts Department hosts an up-close look at Renaissance portraiture through firsthand exploration of two areas of the collections: textiles and portrait medals. Participants will have the opportunity to examine museum objects outside of their cases with curators Melinda Watt and Peter Jonathan Bell, including fine examples of fifteenth- and sixteenth-century portrait medals and samples of the sumptuous textiles embellished with precious metals that feature so prominently in painted portraits by artists like Filippo Lippi and Antonio Pollaiuolo. The study session will mainly address art made in Italy.

Cost: There is no charge for the event, but participants are responsible for their own museum admission.

Limit: 30 participants.

Please note that due to the limited number of tour tickets, conference attendees may register for only one of the tours offered at the 2014 New York Annual Meeting.
