The Berlin Sculpture and Paintings Collections 70 Years After World War II

from: 19.03.2015 to: 27.09.2015
Bode-Museum

An exhibition by the Skulpturensammlung and the Museums für Byzantinische Kunst in Cooperation with theGemäldegalerie, the Gipsformerei, and the Zentralarchiv

In May 2015 the Staatlichen Museen zu Berlin will commemorate not only the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II but also the loss of numerous works of art in two fires in the Friedrichshain bunker. In an exhibition in the Bode-Museum, plaster casts and full-size photographic reproductions will be used to bring important works from the Berlin sculpture and paintings collections back into public awareness. The exhibition will present the circumstances of the 1945 fires and the subsequent fate of the works of art. It will also address the ethical and practical problems underlying the restoration of artworks damaged in the war.
