Houghton Library Tour 4: Introduction to the Printing and Graphic Arts Collection

Tour Date: Friday, 4/1, 2:00pm–3:00

Tour Location: Lobby of Houghton Library, Harvard University (in Harvard Yard, near Quincy St. and Massachusetts Ave.).

Public Transportation stop nearby: Harvard Square T (Red Line).

Tour Leader: Hope Mayo, Philip Hofer Curator of Printing and Graphic Arts

Tour Description: The Printing and Graphic Arts Collection at Houghton Library, Harvard’s principal rare book and special collections library, documents the history of book illustration from medieval illuminated manuscripts to contemporary artists’ books. It also includes examples of typography and calligraphy and other materials relating to the book arts. Participants will see a selection of items relating to the Renaissance.

Reminders: Each member may sign up for only one tour. All tours are free of charge. Tour participants are generally expected to provide their own transportation to and from the tour; the Boston College tour is an exception in that it will offer a shuttle bus. Typically the tours fill very quickly, and there is not room for everyone to attend. If you sign up for a tour and find that you cannot attend, please notify the RSA so that someone else can take your place.
