Evening Seminar (in Italian) at the German Historical Institute of Rome (Italy)

The Seminar will present the results of Dr. Ballone's most recent research on the sources regarding the Papal censorship of the juridic treatise "De Indiarum Iure" published in 1629–1639 by the Councillor of the Indies (and former royal justice in Lima, Peru) Juan de Solòrzano Pereira (*1575, +1655). Included in the Index of forbidden books of 1647, the work of Solorzano addressed important aspects of the administration of the Americas, including the highly sensitive subject of Spain's Royal Patronage over the Church. The Seminar will present and discuss a corpus of sources hitherto under-researched from the archives of the Congregation of the Index in the Vatican State, trying to contextualise them in the broad picture of the complex relationship Spain-Roman Curia of the early modern period.
