A new exhibition series entitled Close Up features a single work of art in Isabella Stewart Gardner’s collection. Removed from the historic palace and displayed in our temporary exhibition gallery, it is the subject of lectures, in-gallery presentations and a book. To inaugurate this new program we chose one of Isabella’s favorite paintings, The Annunciation by Piermatteo D’Amelia. We invite you to experience it close up and to explore the impact of the Italian Renaissance on contemporary art.

Forging a dialogue between past and present, Piermatteo’s Annunciation joins Bill Viola’s study for Emergence, a video installation on loan from Yale University Art Gallery. Explore the connections between two works made half a century apart by artists at the peak of their careers who each found inspiration in a shared set of texts and images.
