Proposed Topic Area Splendor and Decorum: Living with Art in the Late Renaissance, 1550-1650

Despite the extensive bibliography on furnishings and art collections within prominent domestic spaces in the late Renaissance, no study of the actual display of art has yet been undertaken for this period. These panels will explore this subject both from a descriptive perspective (where, what, and how) and a dynamic one, in which objects, people, ideas, and values are in continual motion. We will stress such issues as: how conventions of display developed in relation to architectural typologies and functions, including the notions of typical versus innovative arrangements of objects and decoration; display of art as performance; how and why patrons adapted old inherited spaces and objects to new modes of display; accessibility of interior spaces to varied audiences; how ideas regarding display circulated; and, the analogies between display of self and display of art, for example between "dressing" an interior (with art, textiles, corami etc.) and an owner's mode of dress. Papers addressing display of art, especially in elite dwellings in major cities in Europe and beyond are welcome. Please email abstracts of 150 words and a short cv to Barbara Furlotti (bfurlotti@gmail.com) and Frances Gage (fmgage@gmail.com) by May 12, 2010.
