Update to the Lambert Barnard Panel Paintings
Appeal, Chichester, June 2011
The first stage of the conservation of the early
Tudor paintings executed by Lambert Barnard for Bishop Robert Sherburne in
Chichester Cathedral has been completed. Over the last four months, a team from
the Hamilton Kerr Institute, of Cambridge University, has meticulously
consolidated and surface-cleaned, in situ, approximately 69,000 square inches
of painted surface, forming the five sections of the series that depicts the
history of the foundation of the see of Chichester and its continuation under
Henry VIII, now hanging in the south and north transepts. A report of the
team’s findings will be prepared, and will add much to our understanding of how
these huge paintings were realised, enabling a clearer picture of early Tudor
painting practice. Incidentally, but no less importantly, these findings,
encompassing both the original painting and an indication of the type of work
undertaken by later restorers, will add to our understanding of the
historiography, and historical reception of these important and unusual images.
The report will be published in an edition of the Hamilton Kerr’s forthcoming
journal, 'Cambridge Studies in Conservation and Material Culture'. Should
anyone be interested in seeing some of the results, the Institute have
maintained news updates and images on http://www-hki.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk/news/chichester/feed/.
The project could not have been realised without the generosity of a large
number of individuals and charitable donations. These magnificent paintings are
now secured for the immediate future.
