Fraud, Mockery, Jest, and Cony-Catching in the Early Modern Period

To what extent is a jest also a lie? Are frauds funny? Taking a cue from “mockery” as mimic, sham, and spoof, this panel is interested in the ways fraud, imposture, and deceit function as ludic entertainment – whether intentionally or as byproduct.

This panel invites submissions that consider the jocularity of fraud, counterfeit, trickery, disguise, quackery, and cozenage. Papers are welcome to explore the theme in regards to:

-  Material culture including trick objects like blow books, mock almanacs, or fraudulent copies of famous works

Gendered experiences of deception or artifice

-  Jestbooks, ludic ballads, mock pamphlets

-  Mountebanks, street performers, gambling games, and pick-pockets

Medicine, especially the preoccupation with quack physicians

Natural philosophy and debates pushing back against charges of superstition

-  Magic, either through a focus on prestidigitation or representations and discussions of witchcraft

Satire

parody

Religious debates including displays of anti-Catholic sentiment and fears as well as fetishizations of “Popery”

-  Theatre, stagecraft, and/or anti-theatrical sentiment

 

Proposals should be for 20-minute papers, and should include:

    title for the paper

    abstract of 150 words

    1-page CV

In Search of the Canon: Poets and Artists Confronting with their Models (c. 1500-1700)

The theory of Imitation was a central topic of discussion in the ‘Republic of Letters’. The European community of humanists, philosophers, poets and artists was engaged in the dispute over the models to refer to during the creative process. How to develop a normative canon as a reference point for artists and writers in the practice of Imitation? Which poets and artists to select as the examples of ‘bello stile’?

While the authority of ancient models was universally acknowledged, the building of a canon of modern masters was under discussion. One of the typical environments of this discussion were the Academies, where writers, artists, philosophers, antiquarians gathered around learned patrons.

Considering the interdisciplinary nature of this debate, this panel aims to explore the construction of a canon through a comparative and interdisciplinary perspective. The main purpose is not only to study the mechanisms implied in the building of the canon but also to bring out the intersections between Art and Literature concerning this topic.

Questions to be considered include but are not limited to: the institutions where the debate took place, with a particular focus on the Academies; rhetorical devices for debating the canon and the metaphors of Imitation; the circulation of the canon through publishing, printings, new editions and reproductive printmaking; the impact of the canon on the teaching practices.

Devotional Materiality in Early Modern England

Seeking papers to complete a panel on material manifestations of Protestant faith in early modern England to be presented at the annual meeting of the Renaissance Society of America, Toronto, March 17-19, 2019.


This panel considers how Protestant worship practices are tied to the material world. How do the physical qualities of worship influence the stereotypically “cerebral” qualities of the Protestant faith? How is the divide between public and private worship complicated by the physicality of devotion? Panelists might approach these questions by considering how Protestant devotional practices involve the body or what role texts play balancing the spiritual and the physical in Protestant devotion? They might also consider:

  • Descriptions of protestant devotional practices

  • The physicality of liturgies and/or devotional texts

  • Calvinist materiality

  • The gendering of devotional practices

Rewriting and Adapting Classical Women in the Italian Renaissance

From compendia of “illustrious women” modelled on Boccaccio’s De mulieribus claris, to Machiavelli’s Lucrezia in the Mandragola, to Giambattista Gelli’s (male-driven) philosophical dialogue La Circe, women from the classical tradition are resurrected in many forms and to many ends over the course of the Italian Renaissance. This panel seeks to investigate how authors and intellectuals rewrote, revised, and (in some cases) reclaimed classical women in Renaissance Italian discourse and literature. 

Topics, authors, and questions that papers might address include, but are not limited to:

-       How do discussions or representations of classical women in philosophical or didactic genres like dialogues, treatises, and compendia of “illustrious women” engage with the ancient past? How are classical women recast or reframed to argue contemporary issues, such as the debate surrounding the querelle des femmes?

-       How do Italian Renaissance women writers like Gaspara Stampa, Lucrezia Marinella, or Moderata Fonte recall, rewrite, or reclaim narratives of classical women in their textual production and/or in their authorial personae?

-       How were classical women reimagined or emulated in Italian Renaissance drama? This might include women’s roles as heroines or antiheroines in comedies like Machiavelli’s Mandragola and tragedies like Trissino’s Sophonisba, or the legacy of the cult of Diana in the pastoral.

-       How do exempla of classical women compare to discussions of contemporary women? What function do classical women fill in light of new female regents and their emerging presence on the European stage? (e.g. Tasso’s Discorso della virtù femminile e donnesca or Serdonati’s Donne illustri)

The blockbuster success of the 2017 film Wonder Woman reignited a global interest in the figure of the Amazon, eliciting celebrations of female strength and independence alongside debates about her exoticism and sexualization. A sequel, already highly anticipated by many, is slated for release in late 2019.

Such a widespread interest in the Amazonian warrior-woman—both her allure and her paradox—is not, however, a new phenomenon; the Amazons likewise captured the popular and elite imagination of the Early Modern period, featuring in literary productions across Europe. Building on scholarship by Frédérique Verrier, Kathryn Schwarz, Sarah Colvin and Helen Watanabe-O’Kelly, Eleonora Stoppino, and Gerry Milligan (among many others), this panel seeks to put Early Modern representations of Amazons into dialogue with one another, across linguistic traditions and national borders, in order to explore the nuances of how these women were imagined, discussed, and disseminated across Europe.

We welcome papers that explore questions of sexuality, female violence, gender-bending, orientalism, politics, and the like. Texts and themes of interest might include, but are not limited to:        

-       Histories (and “histories”) of the Amazons

-       Literary and poetic imaginations of Amazonian women and/or their descendants, such as in the epic-chivalric tradition or in theater and/or opera

-       Treatises, dialogues, or correspondences that make reference to Amazons in order to engage with the querelle des femmes

-       The Early Modern use of Amazonian lore or symbolism for encomiastic purposes

Transforming Bodies in Early Modern Drama

How are bodies–of people, plants, or animals–transformed on the early modern stage? What are the agents of transformation, and is there something about drama in particular that allows for bodily transformation? How is transformation represented (or not represented) dramatically? What constitutes a "body" on stage, and is a body still the same if parts of it transform? What does the transformation of the body tell us about corporeal unity, identity, transformation, or the instability of the body or identity? How can bodily transformation intersect with theoretic frameworks such as materialism, historicism, ecocriticism, animal studies, or the post-human?
 
Topics may include (but are not limited to) the way violence (physical, sexual, verbal), ritual, disguise, death, love, the natural world, disease, wounds, language, power, fear, etc have a transforming effect on the early modern human and non-human bodies that populate early modern drama, through any theoretical lens.

Kircher’s World

This panel invites papers on the work, influence, or problematization of the seventeenth-century polymath, Athanasius Kircher (1602-1680). A category defying figure caught between the encyclopaedism of the Renaissance and the turn toward specialized knowledge, Kircher has not received the attention of his more “scientific” contemporaries, such as Kepler or Newton, and is often regarded as an outside figure, given his penchant for the arcane, the mysterious, and his adherence to the Hermetic tradition, despite the work of Copernicus. At the same time, the vast outpouring of Kircher’s work on a broad range of subjects—Egyptian civilization and hieroglyphs (Oedipus Aegyptiacus), music (Musurgia Universalis), China (China Monumentis), geology (Mundus Subterraneus)—was extremely influential to a wide audience during his lifetime. Of particular interest are papers dealing with Kircher’s Mundus Subterraneus and the influence of this text and his viewpoint on geology, theories of the formation of the earth, and volcanism.

 The Female Body as Text in Renaissance Literature

As the Renaissance saw a rise in female literacy and texts addressed to women readers, the relationship between gender and genre was foregrounded in debates about the appropriate texts for women to read – or if it was appropriate for women to read at all.  These conversations particularly centered on the genre of romance, simultaneously a genre classed as feminine and a genre deemed morally inappropriate for women to read. While these debates raged outside literary texts, within the texts themselves, we see women reading and women as objects to be read – both by the reader of the text and by other characters within the text. How does the female body serve as a text within a text? What unique possibilities does the female body offer for allegory, for interpretation, or for generic symbolism? How is the female body productively linked to literary meaning in the Renaissance? This session, sponsored by  UCLA’s CMRS, proposes to explore these issues through interdisciplinary papers and discussion.

Character beyond Shakespeare

Despite the rise of new character criticism and other important movements (e.g. new materialism, the history of emotions, digital humanities), early modern scholarship on character remains dominated by Shakespeare’s plays and their dramatis personae. “Non-Shakespearean” character and characterization tend to be judged according to “Shakespearean” models of “interiority”, “individuation” and “depth”. Narratives of the historical development of character continue to focus on ground broken by Shakespeare, especially at the turn of the seventeenth century, with plays such as Julius Caesar and Hamlet still reigning supreme as game-changers.

This panel invites papers that investigate non-Shakespearean models and paradigms of character in sixteenth- and seventeenth-century England, whether in dramatic, non-dramatic or non-literary contexts. Papers might consider the following:

·         What are the significance of characterization techniques developed by playwrights such as Thomas Kyd, John Marston, Francis Beaumont, John Fletcher, Thomas Heywood, Thomas Middleton and Philip Massinger?
·         How does character work in non-dramatic genres such poetry, historiography and life-writing? How were notions of fictional persons shaped—for example—by the rise of English prose fiction from the 1560s, the vogue for sonnets and epigrams in the 1590s, and the popularity of “character” books from the 1610s?
·         Do neglected or derided types of character need to be (re)assessed, such as allegorical characters, bit parts or “extras”, animal characters, humoral personalities, and co-authored characters?
·         What is the importance of authors who write across genres such as George Gascoigne, Robert Greene, John Lyly, Thomas Dekker, Thomas Nashe and John Webster, female authors such as Isabella Whitney, Mary Wroth, Aemilia Lanyer, Mary Sidney, Anne Clifford and Margaret Cavendish, or non-authorial agents of character-creation such as stationers, scribes, patrons, actors, audiences and readers?
·         What are the roles of character and impersonation in “non-literary” texts, such as sermons, medical manuals and conduct books, or even “non-textual” forms in material and visual culture (e.g. paintings, architecture, emblems, jewellery, gaming cards & tokens)?
·         How does the lexicon of character and characterization (e.g. charactery, personation, passionating, inwardness) develop outside the Shakespeare canon?
·         How are digital media creating new access to and new forms of interaction with early modern characters beyond the Shakespeare canon?


Papers may discuss Shakespearean drama, but must do so in relation to other early modern authors, genres or forms. Non-traditional and experimental approaches are encouraged, as are alternative historical narratives that challenge Shakespeare’s place at the epicentre of early modern character criticism. Proposals are welcome from scholars working in any discipline.

Age and Gender in Early Modern Italy

While historians and art historians have deeply engaged in the analysis of elderly women in preindustrial societies, most notably Christiane Klapisch-Zuber in Women, Family, and Ritual in Renaissance Italy and, more recently, Erin J. Campbell in “Prophets, Saints, and Matriarchs: Portraits of Old Women in Early Modern Italy;” literary critics have yet to fully explore issues of aging and the portrayals of female old age in Italian literature.  This session aims to address this gap in literary studies and invites presentations that explore historical and fictional representations of old women in Early Modern Italy. From the elderly female advisors in Giovanni Boccaccio’s Elegia di Madonna Fiammetta and Alessandro Piccolomini’s La Raffaella to the aging female lover in Italian lyric poetry, the depictions of old women in Early Modern Italy are numerous and rarely marginal. Topics may include, but are not limited to:

- The aesthetics of old age and the body of the elderly;

- Comparative approaches to gender and age: elderly women versus men; the male versus female gaze on old women;

- The authorial voice of the old woman (in poetry and epistolary writings);

- Portrayals of aging and old age in medical treatises and conduct manuals;

- The roles assumed by the elderly woman: grandmother, widow, advisor, mezzana, witch;

- Old age and the performance of the memory of the past;

- Reception of ancient and biblical old women into Early Modern literature;

- The influence of Fernando de Rojas’s Celestina in Italian comedies;

- The relationship between gender, age and literary genre;

- Education and gender, or the role of the elderly adviser in amatory treatises;

- Old women versus young women;

- Issues of ageism in scholarship, contemporary or historical;
