To mark the 500th anniversary of Raphael's death, the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum brings together for the first time the legendary painter's portrait of Tommaso Inghirami and the ex-voto of an episode from his life from the Vatican Museums.

Through these works and others, this exhibition explores the career of the erudite papal librarian, celebrated by Erasmus as the "Cicero of our era". The story of Isabella Stewart Gardner's dramatic acquisition of the first Raphael in America unfolds through never-before-seen archival materials from the museum's own collection. This exhibition is accompanied by a book and two public programs, with professors Joseph Connors and Ingrid Rowland.
