Call for Papers:

Utopia symposium.

6-7. May 2010,

The Norwegian Institute in Rome, Italy

From antiquity to the present, utopian visions have played an important role in philosophy, theology, politics, science, technology, architecture, urban planning, the fine arts and literature. The symposium aims to investigate concepts of utopia in theoretical disciplines, analyze historical attempts of realizing utopian visions in society, and interpret expressions of utopian ideals in various artistic media.

The symposium lectures will be structured in three sessions:

Utopia as a theoretical concept

(Philosophy, theology, political science, the history of ideas.)

Utopian science, technology and society

(The history of science and technology, economic and social history.)

Utopian aesthetics

(Architecture, urban planning, the fine arts, literature, theater and film.)

We hope that the participants will attempt to transcend disciplinary borders and challenge pre-existing interpretations of utopian theory, practice and artistic expression.

All accepted papers will be published in digital form. Selected papers will be included in a subsequent edited book or journal volume devoted to the symposium topic. The symposium papers should be 20 minutes (ca. 10 double-spaced pages) and in English.

Please send a one-page CV and an abstract of 150-200 words to Einar Petterson by December 15, 2009.

Participants will be notified by January 15, 2010.

Organizer: Einar Petterson, Professor of Art History, University of Oslo, Norway

The symposium is sponsored by the Department of Philosophy, Classics, History of Art and Ideas, University of Oslo, Norway.
