Proportional Systems in the History of Architecture:

An International Conference Hosted by Leiden University, 17-19 March 2011

Organizers: Matthew A. Cohen, Prof. dr C.A. van Eck, and Eelco Nagelsmit

Please save the date and plan to join us for an international conference on proportional systems in the history of architecture, to take place at Leiden University, The Netherlands, from 17-19 March 2011. The purpose of this conference is to frame a rigorous new scholarly discussion of this subject, and in the process, to help define appropriate methods, standards and limits for it. The conference will explore this subject during any period, and from both historical and historiographical points-of-view.

Our conference falls on the 60th anniversary of the conference on proportional systems held during the Ninth Triennale in Milan in 1951, which was attended by Le Corbusier, Rudolf Wittkower, James S. Ackerman, and other important figures in the fields of architectural history, architecture and other arts. Ours will be both a critique of the discussion initiated in 1951, and a continuation of it in new directions. We are particularly honored to have the participation of Howard Burns, our key note speaker, and James S. Ackerman to share their unique perspectives on this complex problem.

Confirmed speakers thus far include:
