"Caravaggio’s Gypsy Fortune Teller: Virtues and Vices in Post-Tridentine Italy”
We seek papers addressing Caravaggio’s early work, more specifically his genre paintings such as gypsy fortune tellers and cardsharps. Papers may also address the influence of his work on other artists, i.e. the Caravaggisti, and a range of other related topics, such as gambling in Post-Tridentine Italy. We welcome a wide range of methodologies as well as interdisciplinary approaches to the subject. Papers should last approximately 20 minutes with 10 minutes for questions. The conference is being held in honor of Caravaggio’s painting, the Buona Ventura, or Gypsy Fortune Teller, which is arriving from the Capitoline Museum in Rome and will be in New York during the first week of June. The conference date is set tentatively for June 2 at a New York City CUNY campus (specific campus to be determined - details will follow shortly). The half-day conference will be followed by an afternoon viewing of the painting at the Italian Cultural Institute on 68th and Park Avenue. Please send both a hard copy and email to Patrizia Rocco, CUNY Graduate Center, c/o 240 East 86th St., Apt. 6M, 10028, Deadline for papers: March 30th, 2011. Speakers will be notified by April 15, 2011.
