The Art History Program of American University announces the fourth annual Feminist Art History Conference, which will take place from Friday November 8 to Sunday November 10, 2013. Sessions begin on Friday afternoon in the Katzen Arts Center on the American University campus, followed by an opening reception and keynote address on Friday evening. Conference sessions continue on Saturday on the AU campus. The fourth Feminist Art History Conference continues to explore the legacy of two pioneering feminist art historians, Norma Broude and Mary D. Garrard, professors emerita of art history at AU. This year’s conference includes over sixty papers in sixteen sessions, spanning a broad range of topics and periods, and demonstrating the diverse ways that feminist research and interpretation continue to inform art historical analysis and scholarship. The keynote address, "Devotion and Desire: Women Viewers and the Case of the ‘Lesbian Nun’ in Early Seventeenth-Century Italy,” will be given by Patricia Simons, Professor of Art History at the University of Michigan. Professor Simons, a specialist in the art of Renaissance and Baroque Europe, is known for her important scholarship on issues of gender, sexuality, and homosexuality, from her groundbreaking feminist article, "Women in Frames,” to her recent book, The Sex of Men in Premodern Europe: A Cultural History.
