This conference will examine the connections between theatre and music in seventeenth-century Italy. As a century which produced countless milestones in both fields, its influence was felt both at home and in a broader European context. Baroque music and theatre have been on the forefront of the rediscovery of the Seicento, which has received increasing scholarly attention in recent years. However, the intersections between the two fields remain underexplored.

Only recently have scholars begun to investigate this subject, for example in analysing the relationship between Commedia dell’Arte and early operatic forms. Theatre and opera often shared the same audience, performance venues, and performers. Playwrights and musicians, such as Giovan Battista Andreini and Claudio Monteverdi, entered into fruitful collaborations. Other artists, like the cantattrice Virginia Ramponi and the virtuosa Margherita Costa, enjoyed a musical as well as a theatrical and literary career. This web of undiscovered connections will be the focus of this conference.

Questions to be considered when submitting proposals include but are not limited to:
  • collaborations between playwrights and musicians;
  • networks and relationships between patrons, authors, composers, and performers;
  • role of courts and academies;
  • dilettantismo and professionismo in music and theatre;
  • performance of the female voice;
  • creation of hybrid forms;
  • intersections between music and theatre in the biographies of individual performers;
  • influences of Italian music and theatre abroad.

We welcome the submission of individual papers, as well as proposals for complete panels of three papers. Individual paper proposals should consist of a title, an abstract (max. 250 words), list of 6 keywords, a short CV, with biography and list of publications (max. 1 page). Proposals should be submitted to intersections.cambridge@gmail.com in a single document. The deadline for submissions is 9th July 2018. This conference is intended for scholars at all stages of their career. Early-career researchers and PhD candidates are particularly welcome. Presentations can be held in English or Italian. There will be a fee to cover registration and refreshments. We regret that no travel grants will be available.
