Post-Doctoral Fellowship in History of Music, Medici Archive Project

The Medici Archive Project is offering an eleven-month fellowship (February–December 2019) entirely devoted to original research on the history of music in sixteenth-century Florence, with specific focus on the Medici court during the periods of Grand Dukes Cosimo I, Francesco, and Ferdinando I. The ideal candidate should have a PhD or equivalent in early modern musicology; substantial research experience with original documentary material from Florentine archives and libraries; an ability to work with early modern musical texts; and fluency in English and Italian (a knowledge of other languages is desirable). The stipend is $45,000 plus $3,000 allowance for travel expenses. This fellowship is made possible thanks to the generous support of Michael Lewis and is offered to scholars of any nationality.

  • A full curriculum vitae.
  • A concise discussion (3 pages maximum) of the applicant's ongoing interest in archival research.
  • A concise summary (3 pages maximum) of the applicant’s research and publication relevant to history of sixteenth-century music.
  • The names and addresses of two senior scholars who can comment on the applicant's qualifications.


The application deadline is 6 January 2019. The successful candidate will be informed by 18 January 2019.
