Newly Published: Llorente, Mercedes, Las Meninas and Mariana in Mourning (Ediciones del Orto, 2018)

Monday, April 1, 2019   (0 Comments)

A new reading of the Meninas.

Llorente was able to discover the occasion and function of the painting in the coming-of-age rituals surrounding the Spanish Infanta. The author's fine-grained analysis of the Meninas is unique both in the approach to the material and in its positive results. For the first time in the long history of literature on this icon of European art, an author has made a plausible explanation of its basic purpose and message, as a coming-to-age memorial to the Infanta as she steps over the threshold, at once biographical, social, and political, of childhood. Llorente has succeeded in making vital contributions to the fields of Velasquez studies, seventeenth-century Spanish art, court studies and portraiture studies.
