DHSI Scholarships

The RSA partners with the Digital Humanities Summer Institute to offer tuition scholarships (application deadline: 15 October 2019).

The application portal has closed.

The Renaissance Society of America is pleased to announce that it will partner with the Digital Humanities Summer Institute (DHSI) in 2020, to offer five tuition scholarships (each for one week) to current RSA members who wish to attend the institute. These scholarships aim to support innovative research and pedagogy in all RSA disciplines, as well as new interdisciplinary collaborations, at all stages of such work. Additionally, all current RSA members will have the opportunity to register for one of the institute’s courses (one week) at a discounted rate (details to come).

The DHSI (dhsi.org) will be held on 1-5 June and 8-12 June 2020 at the University of Victoria, Canada. Participants may choose to attend one or two weeks of the institute. Each week will include a training workshop as well as a selection of colloquia, unconferences, panels, and institute lectures.

Tuition scholarships

Note: If you’re applying for a tuition scholarship, do not register for any course until after the RSA informs you of the result of the scholarship competition. This is because, in the event that you win a scholarship, DHSI cannot refund registrations. Notices will be sent in mid-November.

Eligibility: Applicants must be RSA members.

Deadline: 15 October 2019

Application

  1. Fill out a very brief form that asks for name, email address, mailing address, affiliation, academic status, and discipline.
  2. Submit documents by email (dhsiapp@rsa.org):
    • Resume (no more than two pages)
    • One-page letter indicating which DHSI course you propose to attend and how the digital tools or methods taken up in the DHSI course will enrich your research or pedagogical goals. Please also identify a second course choice, in the event that your first choice is unavailable.

Selection Criteria

Applications will be evaluated by a committee comprised of members of the Digital and Multimedia Committee plus an at-large member appointed by the RSA President. The selection committee will favor applications that manage one or more of the following:

  • Preserve or share data, methods, results, or lessons learned with fellow members of the RSA in ways that can be repeated or adapted
  • Demonstrate clarity of purpose, and reflection on the digital tools or methods taken up in the DHSI course with respect to the research or pedagogical issues at hand
  • Offer an innovative approach to some Renaissance topic or corpus
  • Bring together different disciplines embraced by the RSA, or enable some new kind of collaboration among RSA members
  • Involve participation by RSA members who have not previously attended DHSI.

The committee will consider applications from scholars at all stages of their careers.

The scholarship covers the cost of tuition only; transportation and lodging costs are the responsibility of the winner.
